Supply Chain Management: Are You Prepared for the Unexpected?

Date: Mon, Sep 29th, 2014 12:00:00 am

Your customers depend on you to get them their goods and services, but is your company up to the challenge? Whether your company is shipping your products to the customer or your customers simply depend on you to have your products in stock, supply chain management is absolutely crucial for your company's success. Here are five ways to make sure that your supply chain is up to the challenge.

Supply Chain Management for the Unexpected

1. Identify All the Steps Of Your Supply Chain

Before you can begin effective supply chain management procedures, you must first have a good idea of what you need to manage. Go through your supply chain and identify every company you work with along the way. Make a master list of important information including company names, contact personnel and phone numbers.

2. Create Emergency Back-up Plans

Next, begin to develop strategies for what your company would need to do during a supply chain interruption. Have a list of back-up plans or back-up routes. Make sure that all employees know the emergency procedures.

3. Manage Day-to-Day Processes

Hopefully, your company will never be faced with a significant crisis situation, but that does not mean that supply chain management isn't also important for day-to-day procedures. Evaluate your supply chain. Make the necessary changes so operations flow as smoothly and efficiently as possible.

4. Stay Away from Impending Emergency Situations

If an emergency situation such as a hurricane, tornado or winter storm is threatening to affect your supply chain management, it is best to know ahead of time so you can take steps to avoid the disruption. Stay up-to-date on the latest news and weather information, and think carefully how local and world events might affect you.

5. Minimize Your Risk

Lastly, take steps to minimize your risk. If a certain company is unreliable, replace them. If conflict in another part of the world is putting your supply chain management at risk, look for alternatives. This will help keep your supply chain management working smoothly.
